Network Analysis

Network analysis can be used in many disciplines (e.g. in computer science, biology, economics and in social networks) to find patterns and examine the structure of a network; in particular the relationship between entities (e.g. persons, organisations and websites). In addition, it can also be useful in optimizing of different cases (e.g. transport and shortest path problems).

In this project, all the links between the Star Wars characters from the Star Wars Wikia has been examined. This makes it possible to determine the most central characters based on various centrality measures and to find smaller communities in the Star Wars Universe.


Degree centrality

Centrality in a network describes the importance of a node in the network, for instance how popular a person is among his friends. The centrality can be calculated different ways: degree centrality, betweenness, closeness, and eigenvector centrality.

The network below is highlighted with the degree centrality, which describes the amount of connections a node has to another node in the network. The degree centrality for a node in the network is calculated by taking the amount of nodes connected to the node, divided by the amount of all other nodes in the network.

Highlighting a node in the network, shows the nodes connections, and on the right side of the network view, the calculated degree centrality can be seen.

From the network it can be seen that Luke Skywalker, Anakin Skywalker (Darth Vader is redirected to Anakin Skywaler on Wookiepedia), Obi-Wan Kenobi and Senator Palpatine are some of the most central persons, when using degree centrality.
